Road Ecology Research Interest
Dr. Berry's longterm research program focuses on biological nitrogen fixation and ecosystem nitrogen cycling patterns. Her interest in road ecology is twofold: to examine the impacts of vehicle emissions on roadside vegetation including shifts to invasive species, and on the microbial communities associated with these plant communities, that may in turn be determinants of community composition.

Road Ecology Research Interest
Prof Sperling studies transportation and environmental policy. He is interested in analytical methods, public policies, and institutional structures that can be used to reconcile road benefits and ecological impacts in ways that lead to more efficient and socially beneficial transportation investments.

Road Ecology Research Interest
Dr. Toft research involves analzing the impact of Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) usage on desert and dune ecosystem vegetation succession and plant demography; implications for road placements and restriction of OHV use.

Dr. Susan Handy
Associate Professor, Environmental Science and Policy

Phone: 530-752-5878

Road Ecology Research Interest
Susan handy studies travel behavior and specific factors leading to excess driving (Handy, et al. 2005). She has also comducted studies of the impact of highway bypasses on development patterns in small towns (Handy, et al. 2002).

Dr. Susan Harrison
Professor, Environmental Studies
Davis Campus Director, UC Natural Reserve System Email: spharrison@ucdavis.edu
Phone: (530) 752-7110

Road Ecology Research Interest
Dr. Harrison studies California grasslands that are heavily invaded and largely dominated by Mediterranean annual species. Her research indicates that grasslands farther from roads are significantly less invaded and more native-dominated than grasslands closer to roads (Safford & Harrison 2001; Harrison, et al. 2002; Gelbard & Harrison 2003).

Dr. Jim Quinn
Professor, Environmental Science & Policy
Co-Director, Information Center for the Environment
College of Agricultural & Environmental Sciences
Email: jfquinn@ucdavis.edu
Phone: 530.752.8027

Road Ecology Research Interest
Dr. Quinn directs activities at the Information Center for the Environment (ICE) and the National Biological Information Infrastructure's California Information Node (NBII-cain). He uses geospatial information technologies to assess biodiversity, land use, water quality, and ecosystem health and restoration - much of it as joint projects with state and federal agencies.
